**Azure Cloud Engineer** **Location:** [Melbourne/ Hybrid / Remote – Australia] **Type:** Full-time / Contract **Reports to:** [Cloud Architect / Engineering Lead] **Role Overview** We are seeking an experienced Azure Cloud Engineer to design, implement, and operate scalable, secure, and cost-effective cloud solutions on Microsoft Azure. This role focuses on hands-on architecture and engineering work, with a strong emphasis on Infrastructure as Code using Terraform or OpenTofu, and mature CI/CD practices, particularly with GitHub. The successful candidate will own end-to-end delivery of cloud infrastructure, contribute to architectural decisions, and help establish or improve engineering standards across the platform. **Key Responsibilities** * Design and implement Azure architectures across compute, networking, storage, identity, security, and platform services (e.g. Virtual Networks, ExpressRoute, Application Gateway, Azure Firewall, AKS, App Services, Azure SQL/MI, Storage, Key Vault, Monitor/Log Analytics). * Develop, maintain, and evolve Infrastructure as Code using Terraform or OpenTofu, including modules, composition patterns, state management, and policy-as-code where appropriate. * Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure and application delivery, with a primary focus on GitHub Actions (and supporting tools such as GitHub Environments, Reusable Workflows, OIDC, and branch protection). * Apply DevOps principles including version control, automated testing, progressive delivery, infrastructure drift detection, and safe change management. * Collaborate with architects, developers, security, and operations teams to translate requirements into reliable, well-documented Azure solutions. * Implement security best practices, identity and access management (Entra ID / RBAC / PIM), network controls, and compliance requirements. * Troubleshoot production issues, optimise performance and cost, and contribute to operational excellence (monitoring, alerting, runbooks, and incident response). * Participate in architecture reviews, code reviews, and continuous improvement of platform standards and patterns. * Document designs, decisions, and operational procedures clearly for engineering and stakeholder audiences. **Required Experience & Skills** * Proven experience designing and engineering solutions on Microsoft Azure (architecture and hands-on implementation). * Strong hands-on experience writing and maintaining Terraform or OpenTofu code (modules, workspaces/state, testing, and reusable patterns). * Solid understanding and practical application of CI/CD and DevOps principles, with particular depth in GitHub (Actions, workflows, environments, secrets/OIDC, pull-request validation, and release processes). * Experience with Azure networking, security, identity, and core platform services. * Familiarity with source control, branching strategies, and collaborative engineering practices. * Ability to work across the full lifecycle from design through deployment, operation, and continuous improvement. * Strong problem-solving skills and clear technical communication. **Desirable Experience** * Experience with Azure Landing Zones, enterprise-scale patterns, or CAF-aligned designs. * Knowledge of related tooling (e.g. Azure DevOps, GitHub Advanced Security, policy engines, testing frameworks such as Terratest or Checkov). * Exposure to Kubernetes (AKS), platform engineering, or multi-cloud environments. * Relevant Microsoft certifications (e.g. AZ-104, AZ-305, AZ-400, or equivalent practical experience). * Experience in regulated or enterprise environments (security, networking, governance, cost management).
